Golden Days Festival To Light Up Coolum

If you haven’t been to Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast then you simply must go; the place is practically heaven on earth and, frankly, an ideal place to hold a music festival. Clearly the organisers of the Golden Days festival agree and, as such, have started an event that is surely only going to grow as the years go by.

This year they’ve secured a pretty massive line up once again, with New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop heading up the bill, treating the sun drenched masses to some of their unique roots-reggae-rock-pop and everything in between.

They’ve also secured the services of some of the best Aussie acts around, like Josh Pyke, Something For Kate, Blue King Brown, Deep Sea Arcade, The Medics, Kid Mac, Electric Empire, Dubmarine, Inland Sea, Band Of Frequencies, Stryder and Alys Longmate.

The festival also features a strong surf, skate and BMX component over its two days; giving that extra element of diversity to the eager festivalgoers looking to soak up all that Coolum (or Cooltown as the festival organisers call it) has to offer.

Line-up announced for Golden Days Festival

NOVEMBER’S third annual Golden Days Festival is ready to roll with one of the hottest little lineups ever put together on the shores of the Sunshine Coast.

The relaxed seaside town of Coolum otherwise known as (Cooltown) is set to share its beautiful location with festival goers from far and wide in a celebration of roots, groove and rock music and the surfing culture, along with skate, BMX, art and all things oceanic.

After already announcing one of New Zealand’s biggest and most loved bands, FAT FREDDY’S DROP, as one of saturdays headline acts, organisers have now released the full Golden Days Festival music line-up.

And what a line-up.  Apart from Fat Freddy’s Drop, the Golden Days program for Saturday, November 17 at the Coolum Sports Complex is:

JOSH PYKE is one of Australia’s favourite performers and recording artists. The thoughtful lyrics and weaving melodies of this modern-day storyteller place him in the top echelon of Australian singer-songwriters.

The ARIA award winning artist has been featured eight times over four years on Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown.

SOMETHING FOR KATE has an impressive catalogue of five Top 10 platinum and gold albums(with the two most recent albums peaking at No.1 on the ARIA Album Chart), eight Top 40 ARIA singles, a No.1 ARIA platinum DVD, 13 ARIA Award nominations and a No.2 Triple J Hottest 100 song.

The band’s singer songwriter Paul Dempsey has also released a solo album, Everything Is True, which entered the national ARIA Albums Chart in2009 at No.5 and went on to surpass Gold sales.

Rolling Stone Magazine has described Something For Kate as “one of the great Australian rock bands… with a sound so unique and yet also seemingly familiar… (they’ve written) some of the finest examples of music this country has to offer”.

Golden Days Co promoter Mark Pico said he and partner Brendan Weatherill were honored to have two of Australia’s best singer-songwriters in Josh Pyke and Paul Dempsey at the festival.

BLUE KING BROWN is a2011 ARIA nominated artist, and Australia’s premier, live urban roots crew.  Led by the multi-talented, relentless energy and powerful voice of Natalie Pa’apa’a, Blue King Brown performs a unique mix of dancehall, roots, rock and afro groove built on an irrepressible percussive foundation.

The legendary Carlos Santana described the eight-piece group as “the voice of the street and the band of the future”.

Pico said festival-goers would be blown away by DEEP SEA ARCADE and THE MEDICS.

“They are two of the biggest things on Triple J and Triple Z this year and much deserved of all the praise they have received recently,” On Sunday, November 18, the festival joins forces with the Surf rider Foundation and becomes more family orientated and moves to the beachside Tickle Park in the centre of town.

This absolutely free day of festivities will include stand-up paddle board races, skate and BMX competitions and demonstrations and, of course, top-class music all day.

Six of the Coast’s top music promoters will choose one local band each to play on the day.

Pico said Golden Days is flying in some of the main booking agents from around the country to attend the day and check out the local talent, with a great recording package to be won.

“We think this will be a great way to get these awesome local bands in front of a big crowd and in front of some people that might be able to help move their careers forward,” he said.

“You never know what could happen.”

Tickets go on sale from August 1. Tickets bought before August 21 cost $86 (adults), $65 (students/concessions), $45 (youth) and $6 (children 4-12).

NEW Zealand super band Fat Freddy’s Drop has been locked in to headline the Golden Days Festival at Coolum in November.

Festival co-organiser Mark Pico said the seven-piece soul-funk-reggae outfit had been difficult to secure because of the band’s busy schedule.

“We’re stoked to have them.”

“They’re my favourite band in the world and I know everybody else is going to love them because their music leaves people on a high,” he said.

“They’re the best in the world at what they do and they’ve got so many fans on the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Pico said he knew Fat Freddy’s Drop would be perfect for the festival when he came across a quote by band member Joe “Hopepa” Lindsay.

“Those nice summer days with a park and the kids and picnics and stuff, it just makes for a really nice vibe,” Hopepa said.

Mr Pico said Fat Freddy’s Drop could draw New Zealand visitors to the Sunshine Coast.

The rest of the Golden Days line-up will be announced on July 13.

Fat Freddy’s Drop will be one of 13 bands to play at the festival at the Coolum-Peregian Sports Complex on Saturday, November 18.

The second day of the two-day festival will be devoted to the cream of the crop of local bands, as chosen by Sunshine Coast music promoters.

Tickets to Golden Days will go on sale on August 1.

Early-bird prices of $86 adults, $65 students/concession, and $45 youth are available until August 21.

Prices will then rise to $95 adults, $75 students/concession and $50 youth.

The $6 entry for children aged 4-12 and free entry for kids up to three years of age will remain unchanged.
